Magazines are collections of articles and images about diverse topics of popular interest and current events. Usually these articles are written by journalists or scholars and are geared toward the average adult. Magazines may cover very "serious" material, but usually do not offer consistently scholarly information.
• to find information or opinions about popular culture,
• to find information or opinions about popular culture,
• to locate up-to-date information about current events,
• to read editorials and commentaries of popular interest, and
• to find articles by and for people who are not necessarily specialists.
It depends what kind of magazine we are talking about e.g.: fitness magazines purpose o it to make people understand staying fit its healthy, much more easier to live with a fit body.
We can also talk about what were the purposes of front cover which can be:
- attraction
- Get a sense of what the magazine is about
- For decorations
- To be different from other magazines
- What technologies were used to make magazines?
Type used to have to be set up manually - individual letter in racks - then eventually it became cast - now it is done by computer and everything including images are digitised removing the complicated process of colour separatoin, and the need for off-set litho processes of old. The biggest thing that fuelled this was the old printing unions which had a stranglehold on the industry were replaced by electricians for the new electronic techniques and disappeared along with the old processes - it also means that copy can be printed anywhere in the world (wherever's cheapest) or close to the point of distribution............
well, it used to be done by a compositor, or page makeup guy, the type face was laid out and blocked together... hot metal...

MAGAZINES: PART B
- What technologies are currently used to make magazines?
In the past, QuarkXPress was the application of choice for pros, but in the last ten or fifteen years, Adobe has made a couple of excellent products that have been gaining popularity, such as Pagemaker, and it's replacement, InDesign.
These days we use a PC/Mac with either adobe or microsoft software... its a whole lot faster, and doesnt require any real skills...
- How have magazines changed over the last 5-10 years?
- Examples:
Magazines changed by the font coverts, different topics, pictures, technology that they using to make magazines. They still uses the Logo - name of the magazines that they started of with, that didn't change. Maybe the paper quality, colors, layouts, design.
Example PRIDE:
Since the launch of Pride magazine back in 1990, we have achieved numerous landmarks – from producing the first-ever UK monthly black publication, to becoming the foremost publisher of black magazines in Europe.
Pride Media has grown into what is now a fully integrated solutions and publication house specializing in a range of activities for clients who want to target the ethnic-minority community in all its complexities.

Interviews
In this task we had to interview people to have primary research from our target audience.
These are the videos we had for Media Diploma Unit 4, 4.1 objective. I had to interview 5 person who were in year 8 and 9. I was upset when this tasks was set so I only interviewed one of the year 8's student, she game me permission to take a video of her. The other girls got interviewed by Paula who is in my group. She also got a permission from one of the girls to take videos and one of them to take a picture. The rest was done in paper.
We also had the teacher and because we were only four o us in this group we interview them as a group but in the Video we can only see Paula and the teacher.
This a the first video of me interviewing one of the girls
This is the second video with Paula and one of the students

Target Audience Research Phase 1
1. What did you learn from the interviews?
I learned that most of the peoples likes reading fashion magazines, I also learned that there are not lot of different things people like to see in a magazine but I think it depends on the target audience. Magazines should have equal or a little but more pictures to suit the audience.
2. What trends (similarities/differences) are you noticing?
I learned that most of the peoples likes reading fashion magazines, I also learned that there are not lot of different things people like to see in a magazine but I think it depends on the target audience. Magazines should have equal or a little but more pictures to suit the audience. The differences that I noticed that the people I interview they all like reading different parts of each magazine. The similarities that I have been noticing in each interviews is that most people likes looking at photos, celebrities, fashion tips etc. Most of them don't like to read long articles, they want brief information about the articles and more pictures, also they don't like when there is to much of the advertising.
3. How does this affect your decision as to what goes in the school magazine?
Because I haven't decided to what really is going in to the school magazine I didn't Really had ideas that I could of changed. But it did effected it one way, I know now that I need to find out who is my target audience before I start the magazine, I need to consider what would be the best for them , if it can have long articles and less pictures or more pictures and less writing.
